In her latest single Rumour, artist Foxgluvv shows off an impressive repertoire of musical references. In just a quick 2 minutes and 50 seconds, she incorporates sparkling 80s synths, syrupy auto-tuned vocals like those of Travis Scott and Charli XCX, and a retro 70s aesthetic.
Her lyrics float over the track, playfully accusing the listener of paying attention to the rumours going around about her. Throughout the song, she can almost be heard winking as she avoids even saying what the rumours are, letting you fill in the blanks. Though the track is campy and playful, the lyrics reflect Foxgluvv’s personal struggle with gossip as a queer youth.
The accompanying music video is equally campy and queer, with all the charm of old home videos starring your childhood friends. In the video, Foxgluvv, adorned in Gucci-style Elton John sunglasses, glamorously sips champagne and catches her friends playing telephone.
Rumour is the latest single from Foxgluvv’s brand new EP, “I Never Felt Hollywood”. “I Never Felt Hollywood” released October 11th, 2019.
